SAFFIAN

A grain embossed into leather which gives a crosshatched texture to the leather surface.

SATIN

Almost every fabric that is used to make clothing has also been used at one time or another to make handbags. Satin is a fabric that has a lustrous face and dull back.

SEQUINS

A small plate of metal or plastic used for ornamentation on fabrics. A sequin has a small hole in the center so it can be attached with thread to the fabric, strung with other sequins and/or beads.

SERIAL NUMBER

A unique number that is stamped or printed on a tag usually located on the interior of a handbag or wallet. This number, assigned by the handbag designer can prove authenticity, and can also indicate the design line of the handbag, the date it was made, and even the location of where it was manufactured or location of the boutique (or authorized dealer) it was sold from.

STUDS

An ornamental solid metal button with a shank on the back. The shank is inserted straight through the material and bent which fastens it to the material. Decorative studs are used on handbags made of thick materials such as leathers, vinyl’s, and twill fabrics like denim, versus fine fabrics like satin which would fray and tear from the shank attachment.

SUEDE

Before any leather is used to make a handbag, it is put through various treatments which create a variety of finishes, textures, colors and appearances. Suede is a treatment applied to the flesh side of a skin to produce a napped, velvet-like finish.

SYNTHETIC LEATHER

Any of the various man-made materials developed as less expensive substitutes for genuine leather. Man-made materials have become important handbag components. New textures and colors are always being developed. Light weight and wipe-clean care are two factors contributing to their popularity. Embossing, patent and other finishes used on leathers are created on man-made materials as well. Common terms for synthetic leathers are; vinyl, naugahide, and leatherette.
